🛂 Step 1 for everyone: you must enter mainland China legally

Hong Kong and Macao are separate immigration areas from mainland China. Crossing into Zhuhai means a real border crossing — passport (plus visa if required), or the relevant permit for HK/Macao/Taiwan residents. See the Visa & Entry section.

🚢Ferry: China Ferry Terminal / HK–Macau Ferry Terminal → Jiuzhou PortRECOMMENDED

Two departure terminals, both to Zhuhai Jiuzhou Port: China Ferry Terminal (Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon) and the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal (Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island).
China Ferry Terminal → Jiuzhou Port: about 70 minutes, roughly HK$170–200 ordinary class; around 6–7 sailings a day (approx. 07:35 / 09:30 / 11:30 / 13:30 / 15:30 / 17:45 / 20:30 — check the day's timetable).
HK–Macau Ferry Terminal (Sheung Wan) → Jiuzhou Port: about 70 minutes, roughly HK$200 ordinary class or HK$300 deluxe; around 7–8 sailings a day (approx. 08:30 / 10:30 / 12:30 / 14:30 / 16:30 / 19:30 / 21:30).
Operator: TurboJET (turbojet.com.hk); tickets are also sold on Trip.com and similar platforms. Some sailings are indirect and call at the other terminal — usually slightly cheaper.
Book online in advance. Saturday 14 November is a busy travel day and morning / early-afternoon sailings fill up.
Two immigration checks: exit Hong Kong at the ferry terminal, then clear mainland China entry at Jiuzhou Port (this is where international guests complete their entry formalities). Allow 1–1.5 hours.
Jiuzhou Port → Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel: taxi or DiDi, about 35–45 minutes. Free shuttle buses run from the port towards Gongbei and Xiangzhou.
A HKIA ↔ Jiuzhou Port ferry (~60 min) also exists, but it is only for passengers holding an onward flight ticket — not for guests being met on arrival.

🚗Drive across the HZMB: chauffeur car or self-drive (“Northbound Travel”)RECOMMENDED

Two ways: a cross-border chauffeur car (easiest) or self-driving under the Northbound Travel scheme if you already keep a car in Hong Kong.

① Cross-border chauffeur car / 7-seat MPV (best with luggage or elderly guests)

Hong Kong (including HKG airport) → Hengqin / Chimelong: about 90 minutes via the HZMB, from roughly HK$1,200–1,900 one way (Alphard 7-seat and similar).
Fares are usually all-inclusive — driver, fuel, bridge and tunnel tolls. You are dropped at the hotel entrance; no luggage handling.
Give the driver “Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel” as the drop-off, and book 2–3 days ahead — weekend cars fill up.
Note: on the HZMB, passengers do get out at both HK Port and the Zhuhai Highway Port to clear immigration (about 5–10 minutes each). This is different from the stay-in-car Shenzhen Bay route.

② Self-drive: “Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles”

HK private cars may enter and leave the mainland only through the HZMB Zhuhai Highway Port and may drive within Guangdong Province. The scheme now runs until 1 June 2031.
Requirements: the applicant must be the registered owner and hold a Hong Kong identity card plus a Home Return Permit; every nominated driver must hold both a valid full HK driving licence and a mainland driving licence; the car must be a non-commercial private car with 8 seats or fewer and under 6 m long.
Process: register and enter the ballot at hzmbqfs.gov.hk for a quota → vehicle inspection (about HK$400–600) → insurance (mainland compulsory motor insurance or an “equivalent recognition” HK policy, roughly ¥1,000–3,000 a year) → complete the filing.
Limits: no more than 30 consecutive days per entry, no more than 180 days per calendar year; driving is limited to Guangdong Province.
Bridge toll: ¥150 per trip for small passenger cars (private cars and taxis). Mainland-standard ETC (YueTong card) gets a 5% discount. Manual lanes accept RMB cash, bank cards, Alipay and WeChat Pay.
Route: HK Port → the 42 km main bridge (no petrol stations, no toilets, no U-turns) → Zhuhai Highway Port → about 40 minutes to the hotel.
Passenger clearance at the Zhuhai Highway Port runs 08:00–22:00; overnight traffic uses a separate lane arrangement. The HK Port has a local car park (~673 private car spaces; book ahead at hzmbparking.com.hk) if you prefer to park and take the shuttle.

🚍 Backup: HZMB shuttle bus (“Golden Bus”)

Route: HZMB Hong Kong Port → HZMB Zhuhai Port. Around 30–40 minutes, runs 24 hours.
Fare: HK$65 daytime (06:00–23:59), HK$70 overnight; children and seniors half price.
Frequency: every ~5 minutes at peak, every 15–30 minutes late at night.
Reaching the HK Port: “A-prefix” airport buses stop there (~HK$30–50), or take the MTR to Tung Chung then bus B6.
Tickets: the “HZMB Shuttle Bus” WeChat official account, the official website, or counters / self-service machines at the port.
Luggage: one item free per person (max 20 kg, total dimensions under 158 cm).

🚌 Backup: cross-border coach

Operators: Trans-Island (CTS), China Travel Service, Eternal East and others.
Pick-up points across Kowloon, Hong Kong Island and the New Territories.
Drop-off points include Chimelong Hengqin Bay Hotel, Chimelong Penguin Hotel and other Hengqin hotels.
Around HK$150 one way from Kowloon / New Territories; ~HK$230 from HK Airport.
Book online in advance — weekend services fill up. Be at the stop 15 minutes early.

🚆 Backup: high-speed rail via Guangzhou South

Hong Kong West Kowloon → Guangzhou South → Zhuhai Station (immigration is handled inside West Kowloon Station).
From Zhuhai Station take the intercity line to Zhuhai Chimelong Station — the closest stop to the hotel.
Zhuhai Station and Hengqin Station both connect onward to Hengqin / Macao.

🚗 If you take a cross-border chauffeur car (Recommended 2), the driver drops you at the hotel entrance — you can skip this whole step. Guests arriving by ferry or shuttle bus should plan the transfer below.

⏰ Saturday the 14th is a busy travel day, and border queues are longest in the afternoon. Plan to leave Hong Kong / Macao at least 3 hours before the 16:30 ceremony — or better, arrive the night before.

Do this first, before booking flights. Many nationalities can now enter China visa-free for up to 30 days — but it depends on your passport, the purpose of your visit and how long you stay.

🔄 Other ways you may not need a visa

Mutual visa exemption (29 countries incl. Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the UAE, Qatar, Serbia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Belarus): stay up to 30 days per entry.
240-hour (10-day) transit visa-free: citizens of 54 countries holding an onward ticket to a third country or region may enter via 60 designated ports, including in Guangdong, and stay up to 240 hours.
24-hour transit visa-free: open to all nationalities, provided you stay within the port's restricted area.
Regional schemes: e.g. Hainan offers 30-day visa-free entry to citizens of 61 countries.

📝 If you do need a visa — how to apply (Hong Kong example)

Process: ① register and submit the form and documents online at visaforchina.cn → ② once the online review passes, bring your original passport and one photo (taken within 6 months, 48 × 33 mm) to the centre within 30 days, on weekdays 9:00–15:00, and give fingerprints → ③ pay and collect.
Fingerprints are waived for applicants under 14 or over 70, and — until 31 December 2026 — for all short-stay visas of 180 days or less.
Common categories: L (tourism), M (business), Q2 / S2 (visiting relatives), F (exchange visits). Attending a wedding is normally applied for as tourism (L) or visiting friends.
Fees: service fee HK$240 for regular processing (express options cost more); visa fees vary by nationality and several have been reduced or waived until 31 December 2026.
Timing: apply 3–4 weeks ahead in peak season.

📌 Two things that matter at the border: your purpose of entry must match your visa or visa-free basis, and you must not stay longer than permitted. Carry your passport with you during your stay — it is the legally recognised ID for foreigners in China. Hotels register your stay with the police automatically; if you stay in a private home, you must register at the local police station within 24 hours.

🪪DocumentsHK / Macao / Taiwan

If you hold a Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan resident status, the rules below apply to you instead of a visa. Always travel with the original document — copies are not accepted at the border.

Hong Kong / Macao residents · Home Return Permit

Chinese nationals: 10-year validity (aged 18+) or 5-year (under 18); unlimited stays within validity.
Non-Chinese permanent residents: 5-year permit, max 90 days per stay (extendable by up to 90 days).
You can renew when less than 6 months remain — check yours now.
Apply through CTS (China Travel Service) in Hong Kong by online appointment only; standard processing about 12 working days, express about 5 working days (+HK$200).
Renewal can also be done inside the mainland: about 7 working days, roughly ¥350.

Taiwan residents · Taiwan Compatriot Permit

A 5-year Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents is required; check both validity and endorsement status.

✅ Registered residents can use the automated / co-inspection e-channels. Since 18 August 2026, travellers crossing at the HZMB, Hengqin and Qingmao ports may use either their resident ID card or Home Return Permit — one document, one passage.

Money, internet, weather

Payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay both accept international cards — set them up before you travel. Carry a little cash (RMB) as a backup. Tipping is not expected.
Internet: arrange roaming or an eSIM before departure; a local SIM is also easy to buy in Zhuhai.
Getting around: DiDi is the standard ride-hailing app in China (English interface available); the driver will call you, so having a local number or in-app chat helps.
Weather: mid-November in Zhuhai is around 20–26°C by day and cooler in the evening — bring a light jacket.
Language: English is limited outside hotels. Save the Chinese names of the hotel and the venue on your phone to show drivers.

🚫 Avoid bringing fresh eggs, live animals or plants, and excessive tobacco or alcohol. Cash over ¥20,000 (or foreign currency equivalent) must be declared.
